Elkonin boxes (also known as sound boxes) are a research-based, Science of Reading (SoR) aligned instructional strategy that is often used in the early elementary grades, to help build and strengthen phonological and phonemic awareness skills. They boxes require students to segment words into individual sounds, phonemes, or syllables. The boxes help students to count the number of phonemes in a word (this does not necessarily mean the number of letters). The boxes help with both spelling and reading.

This FREE set includes instructions for how to use the boxes, guiding questions, as well as printable pages of 3, 4 and 5 boxes.
